The father, Pa Ingalls works hard to build a house for his family. The family must be very self-reliant as they face the perils of prairie life. This endearing classic is based on the real life of the author, Laura Wilder, who moved from Wisconsin to Kansas by covered wagon in 1869. It is appropriate for students in third through seventh grade. This high quality chapter book was named a Horn Book Children’s Classic in 1976 and was listed as a Notable Children’s Books of 1940 – 1954 by the American Library Association.
